William Darcy strode back to his office. Damn! Elizabeth didnât know where the scarf came from or that he didnât actually pay a dime for it, but would that make a difference when she discovered his identity? Probably not. She would still insist it was too much.
Mrs. Reynolds followed him and closed the door behind her. âWell? Did she open it?â
âShe intends to return it to me. Itâs too expensive.â
The older woman smiled in her grandmotherly manner. âI warned you she would.â
He dropped into his chair and leaned back. âOther than jewelry, Iâve had a difficult time coming up with new ideas. Once the bath products were exhausted, some gifts were easier than others, but when I saw that scarf, I knew it should belong to her.â
âIf she discovers itâs vintage, sheâs going to be all the more adamant you take it back. I can only imagine her reaction to your gifts for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.â She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at him over the rims of her glasses. âYou know if you hadnât been such a horseâs ass on her first day, you might be dating her rather than admiring her from afar.â
âI know,â he said, his voice low and grumbling. âYou donât have to remind me.â
They both turned when the door opened, and Charlie walked in wearing his usual happy expression. âI just stopped by Lizzyâs office. If the scarf wasnât so expensive, you know she would be wearing it everywhere.â
âHow did you know itâs from me?â
âBecause she told me itâs from her Secret Santa and that, my friend, is you.â
Darcy glared, which only made Bingley laugh. âDonât give me that look. You put yourself in the dog house without any help from me. If you hadnât been such an assââ
âYes, I know. You and Mrs. Reynolds love reminding me of that, donât you?â
Mrs. Reynolds laughed and Bingley rolled his eyes. ââI have a mountain of paperwork on my desk. I canât be expected to take the time to welcome a new company attorney. Especially one who required her sisterâs boyfriend to get her a job. You hired her, Bingley. You make her feel welcome.ââ Bingleyâs voice was the deep mocking one he always used when he imitated him. That voice was annoying! It always highlighted his worst moments.
âWhy do we have to do this again? I hadnât intended for her to overhear me and I apologizedâtwice!â
Bingley plopped into a chair. âI know. You never do mean it, but this time, you regret it. Sheâs the first woman youâve noticed in years, and you screwed it up before you even laid eyes on her.â
While Darcy wouldâve loved to deny it, Bingley was right. It hadnât taken long for him to bemoan the stupid and untrue words heâd spoken that day. Her eyes, the way she arched that one eyebrow, usually at him, the sway of her hips when she walked, the way her hair rippled over her shoulder when she concentrated on a document during a meeting, all of these things intrigued him.
